Filey Information

Filey is a wonderful traditional English seaside resort with a friendly atmosphere, offering restful 'get away from it all' holidays. An active fishing town on the North East coast of England, Filey has enjoyed a reputation of being a seaside resort since Victorian days and the railway arrived from Hull. The locally caught Filey crab is very tasty and can be purchased just across the road from the cottage at the end of Filey Cobble Landing.

In the Edwardian period, before the second world war, the popularity of Filey as a holiday resort grew. With the building of the crescent the town grew in to a dedicated tourist town.

Obviously the 5 mile long blue flag beach is a big draw to most visitors, bordered by the Brigg with its rock pools in the north and Bempton cliffs to the south. Bempton Cliffs are home to one of the largest sea bird nesting sites and there are dedicated viewing places controlled by the RSPB. Whilst Filey sea front is mostly undeveloped there is a small amusement arcade on the Filey Cobble Landing and a children's roundabout ride. On the promenade is a local fishing themed crazy golf course that is quite challenging.

Filey has various other attraction to enjoy. In Glen Gardens there are a boating lake, adventure playground, putting, crazy golf and trampolines. Not to mention grass to create your own games on. Just to the South of the park is the pitch and putt golf, which borders the full 18 hole Filey Golf Club on the cliffs at the south of town. Visitors are welcome and there are some regular competitions open to all to join in with. So don't forget to bring your golf clubs with you to Filey.

You may enjoy a trip to the Filey Museum and the Filey bird garden. For the more active there are tennis courts both grass and tarmac next to the more sedate bowling green.

Crescent gardens houses the band stand where many different bands play, wonderful planting, a maze and the historic Roman Stones.

Should you enjoy old churches then St Oswalds, set high above the ravine in Filey, is worth visit. You will find a map and all details in the cottage.

There is a lot of speculation that the wreck of the Bonhomme Richard, captained by John Paul Jones, fought a battle with the British off Flambrough head and is wrecked in Filey bay. See ToDo pages for more information and links.
